Sound Vision Magazine posted a list of 25 of the most epic opening track on a rock album. I agree with many of these. I particularly love seeing Radiohead's "Airbag" and Smashing Pumpkins' "Cherub Rock."

I wanted to come back to my posting about the music on my iPod. So, let me introduce you to some of the artists that have been playing when I am not busy listening to podcasts.

Ray Lamontagne - Gossip in the Grain.
I have been a fan of Lamontagne for some time. His first couple of albums, "Trouble" and "Till the Sun Turns Black" truly display some great songwriting. This new album explores some new artistic areas for Lamontage. Give this one a listen.

Lily Allen - It's Not Me, It's You.
Allen returns to her trademark: catchy tunes, kitschy lyrics, and and vulgar displays of profanity. All of that aside, I have a slight crush on this Brit. If you want a distraction from radio, check out Lily Allen.

Bitter:Sweet - Drama.
I have been a fan of "trip-hop" for many years. The coma-inducing grooves and multi-layered musical experience is sure to help you forget the money you lost in the market or the increasing size of your credit card debt.

I normally don't do these things, but Michelle sent it to me, and I thought it would make for a good daily post.

1. ONE OF YOUR SCARS, HOW DID YOU GET IT?
I have a scar on my left eyebrow from a pickup basketball game. I got undercut and ended up with 8 stitches. It coincidentally happened on the day my mother passed away. So I have a daily reminder of my mother.

2. WHAT IS ON THE WALLS IN YOUR ROOM?
Nothing. Our house is a cape cod, with sloped upstairs ceiling. Haven't quite figured out what to do with that.

3. DO YOU SNORE, GRIND YOUR TEETH, OR TALK IN YOUR SLEEP?
I do all three. I usually snore if really tired or sick.

4. WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO?
I listen to a lot of different types of music, but I loathe country.

4:30pm I think. My dad would know.

I just want to be a good person and to make my wife as happy as she can be.

I am pretty possessive of my guitars. But I would say my prized possession is my degree; it not only cost me a ton of money, but also 13 years.

I am just barely 6' tall.

Not often. We used to go caving in Kentucky. There was one cave that was about a quarter mile long. You had to go through it on your belly and at one point, the ceiling was against your back. It was maybe 2 feet tall for a long portion.

Sometimes

I loved my senior year. Working with so many people on the yearbook and newspaper was great.

Never a name brand. I always get a store brand. Right now it is from Target.

Post # 3 All in my head

So this is only the third post, and I am getting it online after 10:00pm. This is going to be more difficult than I originally thought. I have to sit down and arrange my thoughts for posting, but as for now I will shed light on some things I am thinking about with hopes to put flesh on these bones at later dates.

1. I have been thinking about teachable moments lately. My degree in Biblical Studies is not being put to much use lately and I think I am going to need an outlet soon.

2. Michelle's website is a lot of fun for me. She has been taking great photos and I get to write the code and figure out how to display them in a semi-professional manner.

3. To revisit the last post: I miss making music on a regular basis.

4. I need to read more often. Maybe I can post thoughts about some of the books I have on my "to-read list".

Well, I know that this may not be that exciting. But trust me, it will get better. As I find my rhythm, I will focus on controversial topics, theology, politics, and pop-culture. However, right now, it is still all in my head.

Post # 2 The rhythm is gonna get you.

Music has always been an important part of my life. My mom used to tell me that my dad would put headphones on her pregnant belly and I would kick to the beat of the songs. I remember listening to my dad's classic rock records as a kid. I have also have fond memories of riding in the car, the radio pumping out Hendrix, Zeppelin, the Doors, Queen, and the Beatles.

I always had an appreciation for music and musical talent. I also had an understanding of the emotional value of music. Not only can a good song inspire, it can also reinforce those emotions that are already present. All of my appreciation developed long before I realized that I actually possessed the ability to make music.

At the age of 18, I began playing guitar. Even with 14 years under my belt, I would still consider myself a "hack". But I can play, so I have that going for me. About seven years ago, I started playing bass for a worship band at a local church. Although I do not get to play as much as I would like, I jumped at the recent opportunity to play with several friends at a New Year's event.

Although I had lost my callouses and had to relearn some basic theory, once I plugged in that bass guitar and began playing with a full band, I was quickly reminded of just how much I love music: listening to it, playing it, and feeling it. Maybe that should be my new year's resolution: to play more often.

Been a little busy lately...

Sorry for the lack of posts. Michelle and I have been house hunting. You can follow along at Our 1st House.

I have been reading several books over the past few months, become obsessed with all things political, and have been brainstorming music and writing. If I can just get disciplined enough to post here I will share some of my thoughts.

Early Christmas Present!

Michelle and I went to Guitar Center to "look" around. While we were there, she surprised me by saying, "If you can find one that you like, you can get it today."

So floored as I was, I did manage to find one that I really liked.

It's a Takamine EG523SC Jumbo.

I am really excited about this. It gives me a creative outlet that I have not really had lately. It also inspires me to write and play again. We also picked up a really decent Crate amp to go along with the guitar.


Who knows. Maybe with my portable recording studio (AKA Macbook), I may start writing and recording some original music for the new year.
